Materials

 

Any type of machine will have to be built from various parts, and these parts will be made from different types of materials. Regardless of its design, the structure holding various pieces together will consist of parts machined from different metallic alloys, plastic materials and / or composite parts.

In this area the designer has a wide choice. The difficulty the designer is facing, if he is aware of it, is to make the best compromise to achieve the best possible end result.

When the first Pentruder wall saw was conceived in 1997, the hydraulic Pentruder 6-16, it was decided that only the best materials available would be used in components that had anything to do with safe and reliable function of the machine. The design of the 6-16 is quite bold as it is, and many quite novel design solutions were used, making it absolutely necessary to choose the very best quality steels and aluminium alloys that were available to us.

The current Pentruder wall saws, wire saw and drilling machines are built from the best steels we could find on the market, and we chose the best possible physical properties for the type of component that was in question. We also used the best possible aerospace quality aluminium alloys we could find.

 

Aluminium components


All parts you see on the machine made from aluminium are machined from solid blocks (billets), not from castings. It is quite important to understand that this type of alloy has the same strength as a good quality steel alloy. The Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) of the alloy we use is as high as 590 N/mm2. A casting typically shows between 180 – 250 N/mm2.

As a good comparison, an aluminium profile extrusion made from the best alloy which is possible to press in Sweden’s (and one of Europe’s) biggest presses has around 250 - 280 N/mm2 UTS.

By using this high quality material for our Pentruder equipment we can be sure that the quality and integrity of every structural part is secured and that there is no hidden porosity in the part. Because of the high strength of the material every structural part can be as light and possible. If we would use a casting the parts would have to be much thicker and heavier to withstand the high forces. 
 
     

Steel components


For steel parts transmitting power or holding the machine together, we only use high quality steel alloys, perfectly suitable for the job they have to do. Here we have been able to use our wide experience from race car transmissions, were we are recognised as a leading company as well.

What we have learnt in the process of designing and building winning race and rally car transmissions, has gone straight in to the wall saws. Without this experience from designing and machining highly stressed gears, shafts etc. we could not have designed the Pentruder equipment to be what it is.

In a competition gearbox or transmission virtually all components are very carefully stressed and analysed by the designers. Great efforts go into reducing weight and inertia of all rotating components as well as slimming down housings while at the same time trying to keep or even improve structural stiffness and integrity.

We machine all parts in house in our ultra modern production equipment.
